Sapha Wangam

Sapha Wangam

Sapha Yumnam draws inspiration from printmaking to explore the interplay between the real world and sculptural forms, infused with neoclassical rhythms. His work reflects the human experience—the duality of pain and the pursuit of new beginnings. By challenging societal myths of unity, he emphasizes individuality as the seed of renewal, weaving together existential themes such as youth and age, life and death, and light and darkness.

His research into Manipuri folk culture has deepened his appreciation for its visual traditions, many of which are endangered. To preserve the under appreciated art of Manipuri manuscripts, Sapha adopted diverse artistic practices. He incorporated vibrant hues to amplify each narrative’s themes and reimagined Subika paintings by blending traditional elements with a contemporary perspective.

Currently, the artist Dr. Yumnam Sapha Wangam Apanthoi M works at Manipur University as an Assistant Professor. He holds an MFA in Printmaking from IKSVV, Khairagarh University, was awarded a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Visual Arts in 2011, and earned a PhD from the Centre for Folk Culture Studies, University of Hyderabad. He has participated in numerous art exhibitions across India and has published research papers.
