Sony Thokchom

For Sony, art is a means to express, connect, communicate, and heal. As an artist from Manipur, he draws inspiration from his roots and culture, telling stories through his watercolor portraitures. His collection of evocative portraits, largely centered on women, reflects his deep-rooted feminine influences alongside a bold interpretation of contemporary tribal fashion. Each portrait becomes an imagined world, a mirror of utopian longing, where the boundaries between past and present, myth and modernity, blur. His intention is not to document but to dream, inviting viewers into a realm where beauty, identity, and memory coexist in layered, arresting forms.

His “Growing Wild” series is a journey of introspection, self-discovery, and reconnection with his roots. It explores the collective bonds of Indian tribal communities through woven textiles, cultural narratives, and nature itself. The series is an act of re-learning, about ourselves, the land, biodiversity, and our purpose and connection to the natural world.
